with Punctal Plugs

Through December 15th 2013, FirstMed is offering a special price for eye exams to patients searching for relief from their 'Dry Eye' syndrome via the punctal plugs. During your visit you will receive a full eye exam from FirstMed's ophthalmologist, Dr. Gyöngyösi, who may determine that the punctal plugs are right for you and your condition. Following this exam the plugs will be inserted during a very brief procedure with no, or very little, discomfort.

The regular exam price with materials is HUF 54,500 - 60,900.

What causes dry eyes?

Your eyes are constantly being bathed in tears which contain many essential elements and oils secreted by special glands. These tears are necessary to keep the eye moist and wash away dust and other debris which normally would lead to irritation.

In winter months irritation may be caused by excessive dry heat, decreased outdoor humidity, staring at screens for prolonged periods, and the increased motion of dust being stirred up by heating units, resulting in a perfect environment for 'dry eye syndrome' for many.

What are the solutions?

  • Drinking more liquids which increase the body's natural hydration.
  • Use a cold-water humidifier to raise humidity levels in your home.
  • Use moisturizing eye drops or artificial tears...but with 8-10 drops a day it may not be the most cost effective over a long, dry winter

Another, better solution: Punctal Plugs

Think of your eye as a bathtub: moisture is continuously replenished through the “tap” located on the upper portion of the eye where the tears are produced. This moisture is evenly distributed along the surface of the eye through blinking, and to keep from overflowing, some of the liquid is constantly drained through the tear ducts, like your tub’s drains. By inserting a miniscule collagen plug into the lower duct, naturally occurring tears are unable to 'go down the drain', thus keeping the eye moist.

Punctal plug treatment

FirstMed's ophthalmologist, Dr. Péter Gyöngyösi, is one of only a few skilled practitioners of this procedure here in Hungary. During your appointment the doctor will give you a full eye screening to check the health of your eyes.

If there are no medical reasons to exclude the procedure then two sterile collagen plugs, 2mm long and  0.4mm wide, will be inserted painlessly into the lower tear duct of each eye. Once inside, the collagen plugs become a soft gel, naturally breaking down over the course of following 3 months to be harmlessly flushed out rather than needing to be removed.
